Police: Man, 38, caught robbing Boxford home
By Bruno Matarazzo Jr. Staff Writer

BOXFORD — A 38-year-old man armed with a knife and a can of Mace was arrested yesterday inside a home moments after police said he broke in.

Police responded to the King John Drive home at 4:30 p.m. after the 68-year-old resident heard a loud noise in the back of the house and fled to a neighbor's to call 911.

Patrolman Joseph Borodawka and Lt. Robert Hazelwood responded to the home and found Jason K. McColgan, 38, on the second floor.

Police charged him with breaking and entering and putting a person in fear, as well as larceny and malicious destruction of property.

He will be arraigned today at Haverhill District Court.

Police continue to search for a female accomplice who is believed to be driving a white 1993 four-door Buick with Florida plates.

The woman who lives in the home was not injured. Police did not want to say which house was broken into.

Police said she had seen the man walking on her property moments before the noise caused her to flee. The 68-year-old woman had been on the phone at the time and didn't do anything about it, Hazelwood said.

Police said the noise was the sound of glass in a cellar door being smashed. The man was able to climb through and make his way inside the home.

He was on the second floor, wearing gloves and holding a pillowcase with jewelry inside, when police arrived, Hazelwood said.

McColgan told police he is homeless and is living out of his car. His last known address is in the South Shore town of Scituate.

McColgan is suspected of another break-in in Topsfield.

Topsfield Police Department: Citizen Information Alert - July 9, 2010

Topsfield Police are investigating a motor vehicle brake-in that occurred overnight on Bare Hill Rd between the hours of 9pm to 6 am where a satchel was taken from the vehicle with electronic equipment in it. Suspects broke the side window of the vehicle to gain entry
Other area towns have seen a drastic increase in vehicle break-ins and residential burglaries over the past few weeks. Bare Hill Rd. borders on the Boxford line where they also have had to deal with numerous motor vehicle break-ins during the past week.
The humid weather seams to be a prime time for the thefts to occur as most residences have their air conditioners on and would have difficulty hearing this type of disturbance in the neighborhood.

See below for a list of prevention tips.

* Be on the alert for suspicious vehicles in your neighborhood.
* DO NOT leave your ignition keys in your vehicle.
* Lock your vehicle.
* Remove all valuables from your vehicle when parked for the night.
* Do not leave your GPS system inside of the vehicle.
* Clean your windshield to remove the suction cup marks from your windshield caused by the GPS mount.
These marks are a dead giveaway to thieves that you use a GPS system.
* Park your car in the garage or if outdoors park under a motion sensor light.
* Keep an eye on your neighbors property as well, protect each other.

The subjects committing these crimes will be driving around casing the area. When they see a vehicle they want, they will drop off a passenger who then commits the theft.

Contact the Police Department immediately should you see or hear anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. Do not hesitate to call.

Let's all work together to keep our community safe.
